Obligatory American Idol post: The top 12.

By neener | March 13, 2007

I thought I’d lighten things up here a little bit (but if you’re in a serious mood, read my previous post), so here’s my take on one of America’s guilty pleasures — American Idol. Before this year, the only season I really kept up with was the first season. (Don’t tell anyone, but I actually voted a few times! Kelly Clarkson, that’s right!) But now, thanks to DVR, I’ve been able to keep track of all sorts of shows I’d normally skip!

Disclaimer: In no way am I claiming all-knowing music knowledge and power, nor do I have half the cajones to do what these contestants do, but come on, this is half the fun in watching reality shows and contests - rambling about them!

This season has been pretty bland, especially on the guys’ side. I haven’t picked out who I want to cheer for, but tonight, I think I’ve narrowed it down.

Melinda Doolittle Lakisha Jones

I love how Melinda Doolittle surprises herself with her big, big voice. She commands the stage with her presence, but as soon as the music stops, she’s shy, little Melinda. The music world needs a little more of this humility. “KiKi” became a favorite as soon as her single-mom story, complete with her lisp and strong voice, was featured during the auditions.

I haven’t recorded the result shows, mainly because that’s when Lost comes on, but also because I haven’t cared who has been voted off so far. However! When I checked online the other day to see who has been given the boot, I was surprised!!! Move over presidential elections, American Idol is the new example of poor democracy in action!

Although I didn’t like her hair, Sabrina had a great voice. But she got kicked off. And guess who was given another day?!

Sanjaya Malakar

Freakin’ Sanjaya! Holy smokes, why is this guy still in this competition. Better yet, how did the heck did he get in the competition to begin with? This pansy has got a lot of family calling in, that’s all I gotta say. I find myself fast forwarding through his performance to the always brutal judges’ comments. If he advances again, I’ll try out for the next season. (Let that not be motivation for you to vote for him!)

Blake Lewis Chris Richardson

I don’t really have a guy I’m rooting for, but these guys bring a little something to the plate. Even though no one liked Blake’s remix tonight, give this guy mad props. He’s doing his own “thang.” From beat boxin’ to composing, it’s refreshing to see someone with more than just a good voice (although I’d argue he’s missing that). And Chris is just a cute little guy you want to put in your pocket and bring home to your parents. He’s a Justin ripoff, but it’s hard to deny that cheesy smile.

Other mentionables:

- Stephanie is good. I hope she steps it up, she’ll make it a three-way race for sure.

- Phil Stacey creeps me out. I think it’s the baldness, the paleness, and the ears.

- Chris Sleigh tries to bring the “hip, indie” card, but he fails every time. Okay, so you did a Mute Math song. Neat. Could you bring good pitch and good timing next time? Thanks. I did miss the glasses though.

- If I didn’t mention him/her, then he/she was zzzzzz. Except Jordin, I think she brought some game this time ’round.

- And last, but not least, does anyone else find it really awkward that Paula just gets up and starts dancing by herself? I swear, she’s on something. Really. Looks at her eyes next time.

So who’s the closet American Idol watchers out there???
