I never thought about how my birthday would end up on a day lots of people find sacred. Specifically, the Chinese find the number eight lucky because the word also means fortune. So, needless to say, today is a very big day for them - not only because today is fortune, fortune, fortune day but also because the Summer Olympics are kicking off. (WHEE!)
While I don’t really believe in “lucky numbers,” today is still a special day for me. It is one that I will give thanks for, continuously, as much as I can remember today, because God brought me into this world twenty-six years ago and has sustained me ever since. This past year has got to be one of the most random years of my life but it has taught me a lot. (Maybe too much? HA!) It is my deepest desire that I take these things I’ve learned and use them to grow and mature in Jesus Christ. That’s it. That’s all I ask for this year. A reminder that my fortune, my wealth is eternal, it is in Christ Jesus.

For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
//Psalm 139:13-14
Los at Ragamuffin Soul put up an excellent mythbuster post on mega-churches. I, too, tend to have a bitter taste in my mouth when I think of gigantic churches with their fancy buildings and their bajillion people. But then I think about my church and although we meet in a small building, there are six services during the weekend. Thousands of people come. And although I may not see the same faces each weekend, I still feel very loved and find community in the midst of the big community. Props to Los for reminding everyone that we’re all on the same team, big church or small.
I could never sleep the night before school. All antsy. Staring at my new backpack, filled with everything on the school list (except that Kleenex box!) Wondering if my teachers were going to be nice, thinking about who I’d sit by during class, and just stoked that I would be out of the house! Hmm, maybe I had boring summers.
To commemorate the freshness of the new school year coming up (don’t worry teacher friends, you still have a good two weeks or so!), I’m going to give the blog a new look. Going to tweak the header but this is the new look for the most part!
Also, a name change to come…! A new (school) year, indeed!
