My efforts to get rid of cable TV failed as I got hooked on TV shows my friends don’t watch. One of those is Chuck. Yes, I get asked if I watch it so the official answer is yes, yes I do. The pilot episode barely reeled me in and stunk of cheese. However, its resemblance to the company I work for was uncanny. I stuck it out a few more episodes and all of a sudden, I MUST WATCH CHUCK.
It’s the small details (the name tags, the folders, the uniform) and the obvious (store politics, Black Friday, uniform) that make this a show that any big box employee can appreciate. But to be a big box technician… and a hero? That’s something I totally get.
Well, not that I am a hero but what big box technician doesn’t aspire to save the day? Chuck takes it further and not only saves the day, but saves the world and (almost) gets the girl. And Chuck has a lot of characteristics I think lots of my coworkers have - humbleness, intelligence, wit, and awkwardness. It’s almost kinda sorta like The Office, but for geeks and nerds with a superhero twist. I laugh not just because it’s funny, but because I’ve been there. Minus the working for the government part.

Early Friday evening while watching Survivor: China for the second time (a friend had not seen it yet), I remembered Frosti’s last words as he was beaten by “a tiny flight attendant, a sassy New York waitress and a lady with a mullet.” Word vomit occurred as I chucked out, “If Denise wins, I will wear a mullet for a week!” Although I did not say it with much boldness, my friend Jenna picked up on it and within seconds typed up a contract which made my statement official. I signed it as well as my two witnesses.
I don’t plan on going back on my words and am feeling quite good that Denise (although an enjoyable character) will not win the Survivor million. If she does win, well, I guess I’ll share the results. Good luck, Denise!
The last thing I watched on my TV was the Family Guy episode where the whole town of Quahog has no cable TV and everyone went crazy. Ironically, the next day, May 2, Time Warner Cable came out to upgrade my service only to completely cut off my cable accidentally. Due to my hectic schedule this month, I had to wait ’til today, May 24, to get a technician out. All he did was make phone call and voila! TV again! Thanks Time Warner, for getting me hooked on all these shows this season, only to deprive me of seeing their season finales. If TWC was a person, I’d definitely punch him in the face. Twice. I won’t say anything. But read this recap on American Idol this week. Even though the writer ends up cheering a little for Sanjaya and his “no!hawk!” it is an admittingly hilarious summary of Tuesday night’s performances. Seriously, I laughed out loud a few times.
